CDF orders prominent Chilean priest to life of prayer, penitence
February 21, 2011
The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith has found Father Fernando Karadima, one of Chile’s most prominent priests, guilty of sexual abuse. The 80-year-old priest, according to the congregation’s ruling, is subject to a “lifelong prohibition from the public exercise of any ministerial act, particularly confession and the spiritual guidance of any category of persons” and “retirement to a life of prayer and penitence, also in reparation to the victims of his abuses.”

A leader in the Catholic Action movement, Father Karadima, who helped train five of the nation’s bishops, was accused of abusing young men while hearing their confessions.
