The Church of England has apologised to two brothers over the abuse they suffered at the hands of two paedophile priests.

In a letter to the two Eastbourne men, the Bishop of Chichester, John Hind, said there had been “failures” in appointing Roy Cotton as a priest despite his previous convictions for sexual offences.

The brothers say they were systematically abused by Cotton, who worked in Brede, near Rye, and former Bexhill vicar Colin Pritchard when they were choir boys.

Pritchard was jailed in 2008 for sexually abusing two young boys.

In his letter the bishop acknowledged Cotton, who died in 2006, should not have been ordained in 1967 after his conviction for a sexual offence in 1954.

The brothers, who would only be identified as John and Gary, said they felt the church had failed them.
