Cops probe whether exorcism caused Va. teen death

CENTREVILLE, Va. -- Police in Virginia are investigating whether a Korean-American teenager's death last year was caused by a religious ritual in her family's home.

Eighteen-year-old Rayoung Kim of Centreville died in July 2008 of blunt force trauma, according to medical examiners, and her death was ruled a homicide. No charges have been filed.

According to court records, Kim's brother told Fairfax County Police that family members and others had been performing a religious ritual on Kim before she lost consciousness.

Kim's father said Thursday in a brief phone interview that police have their facts wrong and he does not understand why his family is under investigation. He declined to comment on whether an exorcism had been performed.
