Lawsuit dropped
CLAYTON > Fenton pastor drops lawsuit • The Rev. James D. Manning has dropped a lawsuit against the unidentified author of a website accusing him of child molestation. Lawyers for Manning, of Solid Rock Ministries, dropped the case last week. Neither Manning nor a lawyer returned calls. He claimed in a suit filed Aug. 20 in St. Louis County Circuit Court to be the victim of intentional emotional distress but apparently was never able to identify the site's creator, who used an anonymous Web hosting service. The suit did not deny the underlying claim. Defense lawyer Ken Chackes said he did not know why the case was dropped. The site includes information from a 2003 suit against Manning and his church, and accuses him of abusing a girl for years, starting when she was 12. According to court records, Manning was dropped as a defendant the same day the alleged victim testified as the sole witness in a brief bench trial. A judge found in her favor and against the church, for $500,000. The parties later agreed that the victim would seek only the $250,000 available under the church's insurance.
