Text size ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - A Roman Catholic archdiocese in Newfoundland says an independent review of its finances has found a misappropriation of funds.

In a statement from the archdiocese of St. John's, Archbishop Martin Currie says Ernst & Young was asked to examine specific transactions dating back as far as 2003.

Currie says the review found "significant discrepancies" in the archdiocese's operating account.

He alleges that based on that information, an individual made unauthorized payments to himself and his pension account in excess of $500,000.

He says he wants church members to know that the archdiocese will pursue "every appropriate means" to recoup as much of the lost money as possible and is preparing to turn the matter over to police.

Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Const. Colin McNeil says the police force has received a formal complaint from the archdiocese and has launched an investigation.
